Vaccines

Recommended Vaccines for Dogs

At Sierra Animal Hospital we recommend that your dog is vaccinated with the following vaccines:

  • Rabies
  • Distemper Parvo (DHPPC)
  • Kennel Cough (Bordetella)

If you have large animals, lots of land or live in an outlying area we would also recommend the Leptospira vaccine.

After a complete series of puppy shots, the Rabies vaccine is recommended every three years. Distemper Parvo, Kennel Cough and Leptospira are recommended annually. If you show or regularly board your dog you may wish to consider giving the kennel cough vaccine every six months.

Rattlesnake Vaccine

At Sierra Animal Hospital we recommend that all dogs that have the potential to come into contact to rattlesnakes get a measure of protection that is offered by vaccinating with the rattlesnake vaccine. Having a dog vaccinated with the rattlesnake vaccine does not mean that a rattlesnake bite is not a medical emergency — it is. In our experience, however, it does reduce the seriousness of a rattlesnake bites and also, in some cases, reduces the need to give rattlesnake anti-venom. Rattlesnake anti-venom can be prohibitively expensive, therefore the rattlesnake vaccine can result in a significant savings — even over the entire life of the dog.

The Rattlesnake vaccine is given 2-3 times a year depending on the weight and size of your dog.

  • FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis)
  • FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)
  • Kennel Cough (Bordetella)

After a complete series of kitten shots, the Rabies vaccine is recommended every three years. Feline Distemper, Feline Leukemia, FIP, FIV and Kennel Cough are recommended annually. If you show or regularly board your cat you may wish to consider giving the kennel cough vaccine every six months.
